Bangkok priest appointed new Bishop of Nakhon Sawan

Pope Benedict XVI on June 19 appointed Father Phibul Visitnonthachai, director of the Thai bishops´ Catholic Office for Emergency Relief and Refugees (COERR), as the new Bishop of Nakhon Sawan.

Bishop-elect Phibul was born on June 1, 1946, and ordained a priest on March 17, 1974.The priest of Bangkok archdiocese succeeds Archbishop Kriengsak Kovitvanit, who was appointed Archbishop of Bangkok on May 14.

Nakhon Sawan diocese covers an area of 93,547 square kilometers. It has 15,993 Catholics in a total population of 8,328,045, according to local Church statistics. It has 39 priests and 80 Religious, and 28 parishes in the 13 provinces covered by the diocese.

Apart from parishes and schools in all 13 provinces, the diocese has been expanding social welfare and development work for tribal people.
